Nottingham University Hospitals are one of the biggest employers in the city with a central role in supporting the health and wellbeing of the local population. They play a leading role in research, education and innovation. Established in 2006 following the merger of Nottingham City Hospital and Queen’s Medical Centre (QMC), the Trust has a budget of £1.4billion, 90 wards and 1,700 beds across three main sites, and also deliver district general services to 2.5m residents of Nottingham, Nottinghamshire and its surrounding communities.

Finance has a vital role in the delivery of NUH’s ambition to be outstanding in health outcomes and patient and staff experience. The demands on the Finance function have undergone significant expansion with respect to the requirements of the Trust to deliver a surplus and prepare a substantial capital programme as the NHS moves towards realising its vision of “Tomorrow’s NUH”. This requires increased statutory and regulatory requirements to demonstrate value for money, compliance with challenging control totals and financial targets. The Trust’s financial strategy, annual plans, transformation initiatives and collaborative working will be required to show whole system benefits for our patients.

The role is primarily responsible for the management, organisation, motivation and performance of the Creditor Payments, Debtors, Cashiers, Financial Accounting, Treasury Management, and Payroll/ Pension departments.

Key Responsibilities;

  • To be responsible for the development of a service provision and delivery strategy for the Financial Services functions to include considering both internal and external provision options.
  • To lead the delivery of Annual Statutory Accounts.
  • To analyse the key regulatory requirements for the technical accounting input to Trust regulator submissions.
  • To operate as the chief technical accounting manager in the Trust.
  • To develop financial controls and risk management regimes.
  • To lead the operation of these controls.
  • To be responsible for the delivering monthly and quarterly financial monitoring returns and other financial performance reporting as required.
  • To manage the cash flow of the organisation.
  • To support the Finance Department input into the management of the capital programme, working closely with the Assistant Director of Finance – Financial Strategy to advise the Directors of Finance, Estates and Facilities and Chairs of capital sub committees on technical accounting judgements.
  • To ensure conformance with all relevant statutory regulations, directives and internal procedures within the Finance Department.
  • To manage the departmental contact with external auditors and financial assessment.
  • To manage the Trust’s relationship with the NUH Charity
